Holidays May 3

World Press Freedom Day

The holiday was established by decision of the UN General Assembly in 1993. The date of the celebration of World Press Freedom Day was timed to the day of signing the Windhoek Declaration, the content of which was to ensure the independence and pluralism of free press. The declaration was adopted in 1991 at the UNESCO World Assembly in Windhoek (Namibia).

The events held to promote the holiday (mainly through the media) are a reminder to the world community that freedom of the press is the basic right of expression, officially enshrined in the universal Law. Every citizen has the right to adhere to this freedom. Moreover, everyone must protect these rights, as they reflect the essence of democracy. This day provides an opportunity for the international community to honor the memory of professional media workers who, at the cost of their own lives, were able to fulfill their duty to their homeland. Authorities should consider providing greater security for journalists around the world.

International Day of the Sun

The purpose of this unusual holiday is to draw attention to the problems of deficiency in energy. As you know, its sources gradually disappear from the face of the Earth, and the best alternative to them is the natural cosmic energy synthesized by the sun.

The Sun is the center of our planetary system, it is the star closest to the House, while others are tens of light years from us and are not able to supply the Earth with the necessary heat, light and vital energy. They are just small cold spots scattered across the night sky. The sun holds the potential of billions tons of fuel to provide humanity with the necessary energy, light and heat among which are a small fraction of all that it can give us. Its dimensions are grandiose, it caresses and destroys at the same time.

The sun itself emits a very life-threatening energy, strong winds with a power of thousands of kilometers emanate from it, but the Earth’s magnetic field, formed due to its nickel-iron core, can reflect these dangers. The sun is a powerful energy raw material, it does not need to be extracted from the earth and it is easy enough to use for your own purposes. And most importantly, the energy produced by the sun's rays is replenished and almost endless (at least, scientists promise our Luminary another 5 billion years of life).

May 3 on the folk calendar

Call to the Ancestors

The peasants believed that on this day those who had gone to another world remember their earthly life and wish to see relatives - those who still continue their earthly path. That is why on May 3 in Russia it was decided to visit the cemetery. It was also believed that today the heavens are opening up, and the souls of the deceased can "fly" through the former haven. On May 3, tables were always set in all the houses, and before the meal, special prayers were traditionally read to help the ancestors gain eternal peace.

On this day it was forbidden to fish, because this occupation was considered a great sin. Perhaps this sign was due to the fact that at the indicated time many fish begin to spawn. By the way, peasants loved to tell fortunes on young fish. It was believed that if the fry spread quickly after exposing the water to a hand, then this year the bread can be sown a little earlier. If they blurred slowly or did not succumb to provocations at all, they should wait with sowing.

Vladimir Monomakh was one of the most prominent rulers of ancient Russia; he safely entered the history of our state as the first serious reformer. And help at the board was already given to him by adults at that time sons. Incidentally, the Russian language is not the only language perfectly mastered by the compiler of the famous dictionary. He also spoke quite easily in six more languages (English, French, Kazakh, Ukrainian, Serbian and Belarusian), read in Latin and studied Bulgarian in his free time. Only, strangely enough, he did not know the language of his ancestors. We are all used to equating Dahl's name with his unique creation - a four-volume dictionary. May 3, 1904 - A patent is received for the first writing pen with a mechanical ink system

This invention belongs to the outstanding American inventor George Parker. In order to earn some money, Parker got a job in a company that specialized in selling writing pens. The inventor began to sell goods, for which he received his percentage of profit. However, these pens were very fragile and quickly broke. Receiving constant complaints from customers, the company set up a pen repair shop where Parker worked. On his own initiative, he decided to assemble a more advanced design. After several months of painstaking work, he succeeded. Armed with experience and knowledge, Parker designed and assembled a fountain pen with a mechanical ink system. On May 3, 1904, the inventor patented this design.
